Clinical Case Study:Acupuncture Support for Frozen Shoulder

Clinical Evaluation

A patient in their 50s presented with several months of persistent shoulder pain and stiffness, which had begun to interfere with daily activities.

Clinical evaluation revealed:

• Limited shoulder range of motion, especially during arm elevation and rotational movements
• Pain during movement and at the end range of joint motion
• Increased tension in the surrounding shoulder and upper back muscles

The patient’s clinical presentation was consistent with common features of adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), a condition often associated with shoulder pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

Individualized Treatment Approach

Based on the patient’s symptoms, functional limitations, and clinical assessment, an individualized acupuncture treatment plan was developed to support pain management, reduce muscle tension, and improve shoulder function.

The treatment approach included:

• Customized acupuncture treatment based on the patient’s specific symptoms and clinical findings
• Electroacupuncture when clinically appropriate to support muscle relaxation
• Gentle soft tissue techniques to help relieve tension in the shoulder and surrounding muscles
• Home stretching and mobility exercises to support flexibility and the recovery process

Throughout the treatment course, the patient’s progress was continuously evaluated, and the treatment plan was adjusted according to the patient’s response and functional improvement.

Clinical Progress

After a period of treatment, the patient reported:

✓ Reduced shoulder pain intensity
✓ Improved sleep quality
✓ Greater ease with daily activities

As shoulder mobility gradually improved, the patient was able to perform daily movements with less discomfort.

Every patient’s response to care may vary depending on individual health conditions, symptom duration, and recovery factors. Treatment plans are developed based on each patient’s unique needs.
